Samsung Galaxy S8 Tipped to Sport Optical Fingerprint Sensor

Samsung Galaxy S8 Tipped to Sport Optical Fingerprint Sensor

  • Galaxy S8 to sport new fingerprint recognition technology
  • It is expected to sport curved edges on top and bottom as well
  • The smartphone is expected to be released early next year

Drowning in controversies, Samsung has confirmed that it won’t give up on its plans to launch the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8 next year. Traditionally, Samsung launched its ‘S’ series flagship at MWC in Barcelona, and if that is the case this time as well, then work on the Galaxy S8 should have already begun. There have been quite a few leaks testifying this, and the latest hints that the smartphone will sport optical fingerprint recognition that will enable reading thumb print through the display as well.

This leaks comes out of Weibo, and is first spotted by Sammobile. It hints that the company will not embed the fingerprint scanner in the home button, and will instead have it under the rumoured 4K screen. The smartphone is also expected to sport a bezel-less design, with no home button, and a curved display on the top and bottom edges as well.

If this leak is accurate, then the Samsung Galaxy S8 will be the first smartphone to sport an optical fingerprint technology. This new tech is pegged to be much faster and more accurate than the ultrasonic fingerprint recognition found on several top-end smartphones today.Previous leaks suggest that the Samsung Galaxy S8 will feature a 5.5-inch 4K (2160×3840 pixels) Super Amoled display and will boast of an impressive pixel density of 806ppi. It will be powered by the company’s in-house Exynos 8895 SoC paired with 6GB of RAM. It is said to sport a 16-megapixel and 8-megapixel dual camera setup. It is expected to launch on February 26 next year.

For now, it has been reported that work on the Galaxy S8 has been delayed as all focus is on finding the fault in the Galaxy Note 7. If you have been living under a rock, the Galaxy Note 7 is now a dead affair and Samsung is replacing the units with a Galaxy S7 or S7 Edge. It is also giving full refunds or letting users be a part of the S8 or Note 8 update program if they so prefer. Several Samsung Galaxy Note 7units have caught fire while on charge, and the cause of it is still a mystery, with some theorizing that the fault lies in the SDI and Amperex-made batteries, while others claim that the fault is in the speeding up of chipset to enable fast charging.

Whatever the case may be, Samsung needs to ensure that it leaves no stones unturned to ensure that the Galaxy S8 is explosion-free.

Tesla, Once Beloved by Critics, Plummets in New Consumer Reports Ranking

Tesla, Once Beloved by Critics, Plummets in New Consumer Reports Ranking

Tesla, the upstart all-electric automaker that once landed Consumer Reports’ best-ever performance rating, has now achieved a far less impressive feat, with a ranking from the reviewer that labels it one the least reliable car companies in America.

The Consumer Reports’ ranking, released Monday, places Tesla at No. 25 of 29 for reliability, with reviewers saying the automaker’s new Model X SUV “has been plagued with malfunctions,” including with the “falcon-wing doors” that have become its signature.

The rough review, based on annual surveys of the magazine’s subscribers, marks only the latest hurdle for America’s youngest major automaker, which has energized the country’s scrawny electric-car industry but has also struggled with repeated production and delivery delays.

Tesla’s sedan, the Model S, was recommended by reviewers after its reliability scores improved from what Consumer Reports last year called a “worse-than-average overall problem rate.”

But the Model X, which first rolled out to drivers last year and now starts at $74,000 (roughly Rs. 49,398,70), was panned by drivers frustrated by problems with doors, locks, latches, power equipment, in-car electronics and the climate system. It ranked last for reliability among a dozen luxury mid-sized SUVs.”It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that there’s been mechanical problems with the Tesla Model X,” Jake Fisher, director of automotive testing for Consumer Reports, said in an interview.

“They’ve taken this very basic platform with the Model X and added so many overly complicated features: the front doors are power automated, the middle-row seats are on power sliders,” Fisher said. “All those things add up in a way that can bring the platform down.”

Musk, Tesla’s billionaire commander, has said himself that the Model X – with its single-pane windshield-roof and air-filtering “bioweapon defense mode” – may have been a bit too ambitious.

“In retrospect, it would’ve been a better decision to do fewer things with the first version of Model X,” Musk said in February. “I think there was some hubris there with the X,” he added, before reiterating that it was “the best car ever.”

A Tesla spokesperson said the company had resolved many issues since the Consumer Reports survey was conducted last spring, and pointed to other industry awards, including industry consultant AutoPacific’s recent ranking of Tesla as “the most satisfying premium brand.”

“We are committed to making the world’s most reliable cars,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “The amount of issues we’ve addressed with Model X has fallen by 92 percent in the last 12 months, a reflection of our ability to make continuous improvements and react quickly.”

Consumer Reports reviewers also said they had “serious concerns” about how Tesla and other automakers had designed and marketed semi-autonomous technologies such as Tesla’s “Autopilot,” which can accomplish many of the tasks of driving, such as changing lanes and keeping speed on the highway, but not fully drive the car itself.

Crashes by Autopilot-equipped cars, including a fatal Florida crash in May, have led critics to suggest Tesla is dangerously touting the cars’ self-driving capabilities. Consumer Reports has now placed alerts on Tesla’s cars saying “automakers should take stronger steps” to ensure the systems are deployed safely.

Tesla beat only Dodge, Chrysler, Fiat and Ram in the reviewer’s reliability rankings. Lexus, Toyota and Buick – established automakers offering many more models than Tesla – topped the charts.

Google Photos Now Shows Full Albums in Search Results

Google Photos Now Shows Full Albums in Search Results

  • Version 2.2.1.136513178 now allows users to search albums
  • Earlier, Google Photos only searched images within albums
  • This feature is active on the desktop version as well

In its latest version, Google Photos has introduced some big updates, most notably support for creating animation through videos. However, the update has also brought the ability to search full albums as well. The app now allows users to search not only photos, but old album folders as well.

Earlier, the app searched for photos inside albums using object recognition and search keyword, but did not show the entire album as a search result. However, Android Police now reports that the latest version brings this ability, and the album search result is enabled on the desktop version as well.

The author claims that this feature could be a server-side rollout, as he had to force close Google Photos and clear all data to get this feature working. As mentioned, Google Photos got a big update across platforms earlier this month. Users can upload images or videos to Photos app on Android and iOS, as well as from desktop that will be made into shareable animations that will include interesting segments. Google says that the new features don’t require the user to do anything manually as it is done through machine learning in Google Photos. When Google Photos is ready with the new animations or with a new collection of favourite images, it will start showing Cards under the Assistant tab of Google Photos.

The update also gave Google Photos the ability to automatically put images right side up when it finds images in collection that are sideways. In the recent times, Google has become increasingly focused on making its Photos service better and more competitive. Google Photos is available in the App Store andPlay Store for free download, and you can even sideload it using APKMirror.

Twitter, Netflix, PayPal Among Services Impacted by Massive Cyber-Attack

Twitter, Netflix Among Services Impacted by Massive Cyber-Attack; Hacker Group Claims Responsibility

  • Friday saw a massive Internet outage in the US
  • Major websites like Twitter, Netflix, PayPal, Spotify were down for hours
  • A hacker group called New World Hackers claimed the attack responsibility

Withering cyber-attacks on server farms of a key Internet firm repeatedly disrupted access to major websites and online services including Twitter, Netflix and PayPal across the United States on Friday. The White House called the disruption malicious and a hacker group claimed responsibility, though its assertion couldn’t be verified.

Manchester, New Hampshire-based Dyn Inc. said its data centers were hit by three waves of distributed denial-of-service attacks, which overwhelm targeted machines with junk data traffic. The attacks, shifting geographically, had knock-on effects for users trying to access popular websites across the US even in Europe.

“The complexity of the attacks is what is making it so difficult for us,” said Kyle York, the company’s chief strategy officer. “What they are actually doing is moving around the world with each attack.” He said an East Coast data center was hit first; attacks on an offshore target followed later.

The data flood came from tens of millions of different Internet-connected machines – including increasingly popular but highly insecure household devices such as web-connected cameras. It was an onslaught whose global shifts suggested a sophisticated attacker, though Dyn said it had neither suspect nor motive.

Broad effects
The level of disruption was difficult to gauge, but Dyn serves some of the biggest names on the web, providing the domain name services that translate the numerical Internet addresses into human-readable destinations such as “twitter.com.”

Steve Grobman, chief technology officer at Intel Security, compared an outage at a domain name services company to tearing up a map or turning off GPS before driving to the department store. “It doesn’t matter that the store is fully open or operational if you have no idea how to get there,” he said in a telephone interview.

Jason Read, founder of the Internet performance monitoring firm CloudHarmony, owned by GartnerInc., said his company tracked a half-hour-long disruption early Friday in which roughly one in two end users would have found it impossible to access various websites from the East Coast.

“We’ve been monitoring Dyn for years and this is by far the worst outage event that we’ve observed,” said Read.

Dyn provides services to some 6 percent of America’s Fortune 500 companies, he said. A full list of affected companies wasn’t immediately available but Twitter, Netflix, PayPal and the coder hangout Github said they experienced problems.

Hackers claim responsibility
Members of a shadowy collective that calls itself New World Hackers claimed responsibility for the attack via Twitter. They said they organized networks of connected “zombie” computers called botnets that threw a staggering 1.2 terabits per second of data at the Dyn-managed servers.

“We didn’t do this to attract federal agents, only test power,” two collective members who identified themselves as “Prophet” and “Zain” told an AP reporter via Twitter direct message exchange. They said more than 10 member participated in the attack. It was not immediately possible to verify the claim.

Dyn officials said they have received no claim of responsibility, but are working with law enforcement.

The collective, @NewWorldHacking on Twitter, has in the past claimed responsibility for similar attacks against sites including ESPN.com in September and the BBC on Dec. 31. The attack on the BBC marshaled half the computing power of Friday’s onslaught.

The collective has also claimed responsibility for cyber-attacks against Islamic State. The two said about 30 people have access to the @NewWorkdHacking Twitter account. They claim 20 are in Russia and 10 in China. “Prophet” said he is in India. “Zain” said he is in China. The two claimed to their actions were “good,” presumably because they highlighted Internet security problems.

Another collective member the AP previously communicated with via direct message called himself “Ownz” and identified himself as a 19-year-old in London. He told the AP that the group – or at least he – sought only to expose security vulnerabilities.

During the attack on the ESPN site, “Ownz” was asked if the collective made any demands on sites it attacked, such as demanding blackmail money. “We will make one demand actually. Secure your website and get better servers, otherwise be attacked again,” he said.

The vulnerable Internet
For James Norton, the former deputy secretary at the Department of Homeland Security who now teaches on cybersecurity policy at Johns Hopkins University, the incident was an example of how attacks on key junctures in the network can yield massive disruption.

“I think you can see how fragile the Internet network actually is,” he said.

Dyn officials said attacks stemmed from tens of millions of devices connected to the Internet – closed-circuit video cameras, digital video recorders and even thermostats – that were infected with malware.

“The Internet of Things sort of ran way ahead of how the Internet was architected,” Dyn’s York said on a call with reporters. He said there are between 10-15 billion such devices online.

Dyn first became aware of an attack around 7:00am local time, focused on data centers on the East Coast of the US Services were restored about two hours later. But then attackers shifted to offshore data centers, and problems continue.

“It is a very smart attack. As we start to mitigate they react and start to throw something that’s over the top,” York said on a call with reporters.

The second attack broadened its net, affecting the US West Coast. “Prophet” of New World Hackers said hacktivists of the broad, more amorphous Anonymous collective piled on in the third wave on Friday afternoon.

“We’ve stopped all our attacks,” he said at midafternoon. The US Department of Homeland Security was monitoring the situation, White House spokesman Josh Earnest told reporters Friday. He said he had no information about who may be behind the disruption.

Security experts have recently expressed concern over increasing power of denial-of-service attacks following high-profile electronic assaults against investigative journalist Brian Krebs and French Internet service provider OVH .

In a widely shared essay titled “Someone Is Learning How to Take Down the Internet,” respected security expert Bruce Schneier said last month that major Internet infrastructure companies were seeing a series of worrying denial-of-service attacks.

“Someone is extensively testing the core defensive capabilities of the companies that provide critical Internet services,” he said.

AT&T Said to Be Close to Buying Time Warner for $85 Billion

AT&T Said to Be Close to Buying Time Warner for $85 Billion

  • AT&T has neared the deal to buy Time Warner for about $85 billion
  • It will give AT&T the control of TV channels CNN and HBO
  • Warner Bros. studio will be also be a part of the deal

AT&T Inc has reached an agreement in principle to buy Time Warner Inc for about $85 billion (roughly Rs. 5,68,773 crores), sources said on Friday, paving the way for what would be the biggest deal in the world this year, giving the telecom company control of cable TV channels HBO and CNN, film studio Warner Bros and other coveted media assets.

The deal, which has been agreed on most terms and could be announced as early as Sunday, would be one of the largest in recent years in the sector as telecommunications companies look to combine content and distribution to capture customers replacing traditional pay-TV packages with more streamlined offerings and online delivery.

AT&T, which sells wireless phone and broadband services, has already made moves to turn itself into a media powerhouse, buying satellite TV provider DirecTV last year for $48.5 billion.

It also in 2014 entered a joint venture, Otter Media, with the Chernin Group to invest in media businesses, and has rolled out video streaming services.

AT&T will pay $110 per Time Warner share in cash and stock, or about $85 billion overall, sources told Reuters. It will need to line up financing to pay for the deal, since it only has $7.2 billion in cash on hand. This could put pressure on its credit rating as it already has $120 billion in net debt as of June 30, according to Moody’s.

Time Warner’s shares rose almost 8 percent in regular trading, and a further 3.4 percent after hours, to $92.50, giving it a market value of about $73 billion. AT&T closed down 3 percent at $37.49.

Time Warner is a major force in movies, TV and video games. Its assets include the HBO, CNN, TBS and TNT networks as well as the Warner Bros film studio, producer of the “Batman” and “Harry Potter” film franchises. The company also owns a 10 percent stake in video streaming site Hulu.

Time Warner Chief Executive Jeff Bewkes rejected an $80 billion offer from Twenty-First Century Fox Inc in 2014, but sources said on Friday that the former suitor had no plans to renew its bid.

The Wall Street Journal reported on Friday that Apple Inc approached Time Warner a few months ago about a possible merger.

Content and distribution
Owning more content gives cable and telecom companies bargaining leverage with other content companies as customers demand smaller, hand-picked cable offerings or switch to watching online. And new mobile technology including next-generation 5G networks could make a content tie-up especially attractive for wireless providers.

“We think 5G mobile is coming, we think 5G mobile is an epic game-changer,” Rich Tullo, director of research at Albert Fried & Company, said in a note, adding that mobile providers would be in position to disrupt traditional pay-TV services.

A previous Time Warner blockbuster deal, its 2000 merger with AOL, is now considered one of the most ill-advised corporate marriages on record.

Dallas-based AT&T and New York-based Time Warner declined to comment.

Cowen and Co analyst Doug Creutz questioned the strategy of buying content instead of licensing it.

“What does it get them that they can’t get by licensing Time Warner content and at a much cheaper price than buying the whole company?” Creutz asked, noting it was unclear what savings could be gained “from stapling distribution and content together. It’s been tried. It never works.”

AT&T would likely be able to win US antitrust approval for the deal, some experts said, but regulators likely would put conditions on approval, some experts said.

Andre Barlow, an antitrust lawyer at the law firm Doyle, Barlow and Mazard, said the government may worry about whether other cable and internet companies would continue to have access to Time Warner content like HBO and CNN.

The US Justice Department “will look at it but they won’t stop it,” said Darren Bush, who teaches antitrust issues at the University of Houston. Bush predicted regulators as a matter of course would make a second request for information, meaning the review would last several months.

The media industry has been seen as ripe for consolidation, and several stocks rose on the news, including Netflix Inc, which closed up about 3.4 percent, and Discovery Communications Inc, which ended up 3.6 percent.

Nasa Sends Three Astronauts to ISS in Soyuz Craft

Nasa Sends Three Astronauts to International Space Station in Soyuz Craft

Two Russian cosmonauts and a Nasa astronaut soared into orbit in a Soyuz spacecraft Wednesday at the start of a two-day journey to the International Space Station.

Nasa’s Shane Kimbrough and Andrei Borisenko and Sergei Ryzhikov of Roscosmos blasted off at 8:05am GMT from the Baikonur cosmodrome in Kazakhstan after their launch had been delayed by nearly one month because of technical issues.

The trio’s mission is expected to last just over four months with docking at the orbital laboratory taking place on Friday.

They will join Roscosmos’ Anatoly Ivanishin, Nasa’s Kate Rubins, and Takuya Onishi of the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (Jaxa), whose return to Earth is set for October 30.

Roscomos said in a statement that the launch had been “successful” and that the three astronauts are scheduled to arrive at the space centre at 9:59am GMT on Friday.

The 49-year-old Kimbrough, who logged less than 16 days in space during a single mission aboard the US space shuttle Endeavour, will command the Expedition 50 aboard the orbital laboratory.

“All systems go!! 24 hours and counting until Soyuz MC-02 Expedition 49/50 launch!” Kimbrough, a father-of-three who served as a helicopter pilot in the 1990-1991 Gulf War, wrote on Twitter Tuesday.

Roscosmos flight engineer Borisenko spent 164 days in space for his first mission aboard the ISS in 2011, while Ryzhikov is entering the cosmos for the first time.

HTC Bolt Leaked in Images; Tipped to Ditch Headphone Jack

HTC Bolt Leaked in Images; Tipped to Ditch Headphone Jack

  • HTC Bolt tipped to feature 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage
  • Leaked images suggest the HTC Bolt will come without a headphone jack
  • HTC Bolt will offer BoomSound audio-enhancing tech only via headphones

Not much has been spoken about the rumoured Android 7.0 Nougat-powered HTC Bolt smartphone, and HTC has so far managed to keep the device a secret. That is until leaked renders started making their way on to the Internet in September. On Friday, some fresh leaked images surfaced online that tell us all about the smartphone – at least in terms of design – including the disappearance of the headphone jack.

Noted tipster Evan Blass (@evleaks) let out some live images of the HTC Bolt that suggest the smartphone draws inspiration from the HTC 10. Images of the HTC Bolt tip an all-metal build tip with chamfered edges and antenna lines similar to the HTC 10. The front of the Bolt is also similar to HTC’s recent flagship with backlit navigation keys on either side of the Home button, which is likely to house a fingerprint sensor. It seems like company wants to hold on to the HTC 10’s aesthetics with the Bolt, seeing as how the design of the flagship has been well received.

The volume controls and power button are found on the right side while two trays (one for microSD and one for SIM) are found on the other side. The HTC Bolt has a single firing speaker at the bottom next to the USB Type-C port. The main difference is found at the back where the flash module is placed above the antenna line.

The Android Nougat-powered HTC Bolt has been tipped to sport a larger 5.5-inch full-HD display and feature 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. Optics include an 18-megapixel front with f/2.0 lens and 4K video capture and an eight-megapixel front-facing camera.

The HTC Bolt is the newest in smartphones ditching the 3.5mm headphone jack following offerings from Motorola (Moto Z and Moto Z Force), LeEco (Le 2, Le 2 Pro and Le Max 2), and Apple (iPhone 7 andiPhone 7 Plus). The report adds that the HTC Bolt will offer BoomSound audio-enhancing tech, but only when listening with headphones.

Remaining specifications and pricing of the HTC Bolt are still under wraps.

Samsung Launches Galaxy TabPro S in Gold With Beefed Up Specifications

Samsung Galaxy TabPro S Gold Edition With 8GB RAM, 256GB SDD, and Windows 10 Launched

  • The Galaxy TabPro S Gold Edition features 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD
  • The device features an Intel Core M3 processor clocked at 2.2GHz
  • Available in the US via Samsung’s online store and Best Buy for $999.99

Samsung in January launched the Galaxy TabPro S, which was the first Galaxy device running Windows 10 OS, instead of Android. The South Korean giant has now launched a new version of the TabPro S, covered in Gold and sporting upgraded specifications. The device is suitably called the Galaxy TabPro S Gold Edition and will be available in the US via Samsung’s online store and Best Buy starting Saturday for $999.99 (roughly Rs. 66,700).

Apart from the new paint job, the Galaxy TabPro S Gold Edition has a few buffed up specifications compared to the regular version. While the Galaxy TabPro Swas launched with 4GB of RAM and 128GB SDD, the Gold version packs double the memory and storage with 8GB of RAM and 256GB SSD.

The rest of the specifications are similar to that of the previous model. The Galaxy TabPro S Gold Edition running Windows 10 features the same 12-inch 2,160×1,440 Super AMOLED display with an Intel Core M3 processor clocked at 2.2GHz.

The Galaxy TabPro S Gold Edition also sports 5-megapixel cameras on the front and the back. The device is powered by a 5200mAh battery pack that will deliver up to 10.5 hours of battery life on a single charge. It also comes with fast charging capability that will fully charge the device in 2.5 hours.

Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a USB Type-C port, among others. The Galaxy TabPro S Gold Edition measures at 290.3×198.8×6.35mm and weighs around 694 grams, which pretty much match that of the older version.

There is no word yet on when and if the Galaxy TabPro S will be available in India. Given that the older Galaxy TabPro S is yet to hit the stores in the country even though it was expected in April, it is unlikely that Indian customers will see the new Gold Edition any time soon.
